Backend Software Engineer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Backend Software Engineer to join Asana’s Reykjavik office. You will work with a world‑class engineering team to design, develop, and operate services and frameworks that power Asana’s product.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and iterate on frameworks that influence all aspects of the Asana product.
• Partner with other engineering teams to enable faster development and help achieve company goals.
• Analyze complex systems to uncover issues, root causes and areas for improvement.
• Champion code quality and best practices through example and reusable frameworks.
• Develop new APIs that balance usability with the capability to support Asana’s feature‑rich web application.
• Write clean, maintainable code and continuously improve the codebase.

Required profile

• 3+ years of backend engineering experience in large, well‑maintained codebases.
• Ability to learn quickly and transition between different areas of a complex codebase.
• Strong autonomous judgment when balancing speed and long‑term maintainability.
• Passion for high‑quality software engineering patterns.
• Interest in AI tools and emerging technologies.

Required skills

• Experience with the React/GraphQL ecosystem.
• Proficiency in TypeScript (preferred).
