Lead Mechanical Engineer – Data Centre Project (Freelance)

About the role

We are supporting a major data‑centre expansion in Iceland and need an experienced Freelance Mechanical Lead to oversee the mechanical delivery of the project. This role sits within a technically complex, high‑profile environment focused on high‑density computing and AI infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical delivery across the full project lifecycle.
• Coordinate mechanical contractors, subcontractors and specialist suppliers.
• Manage installation, quality, progress and technical compliance.
• Review mechanical drawings, specifications, programmes and method statements.
• Synchronise mechanical works with electrical, CSA and commissioning teams.
• Support project planning, sequencing and construction coordination.
• Monitor progress against the programme and flag risks or delays.
• Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards and HSE requirements.
• Assist with inspections, testing, commissioning and hand‑over activities.
• Act as the primary mechanical point of contact on site and provide technical leadership.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering large‑scale data‑centre projects.
• Strong background in mechanical construction and installation.
• Experience working with major MEP contractors, main contractors, consultants or end clients.
• Excellent understanding of mechanical systems in mission‑critical environments.
• Demonstrated contractor and subcontractor management capabilities.
• Ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines and understand construction programmes, quality and commissioning.
• Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, international project environment.
