Senior Infrastructure Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our team in Reykjavík. In this role you will design and build the distributed systems that power our AAA‑rated MMO, EVE Online, supporting a persistent world with tens of thousands of simultaneous players.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build distributed systems that partition and rebalance simulation load across nodes.
• Maintain state consistency under partial failure and ensure graceful degradation of affected regions.
• Design low‑latency messaging and RPC paths measured in milliseconds.
• Develop service decomposition, data replication, and caching strategies.
• Write production‑ready code, manage design reviews, deadlines and deliverables.
• Instrument, load‑test and iterate on designs based on measured evidence.
• Collaborate with product owners and game designers to align platform capabilities with feature requirements.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software development with deep experience in distributed or concurrent systems.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language such as Go, C++, Rust, Java or Python.
• Proven track record designing distributed services, API boundaries, consistency models, replication and partitioning.
• Solid fundamentals in complexity analysis, concurrency, queueing behavior and CAP/latency trade‑offs.
• Experience with distributed communication patterns: RPC, pub/sub, message queues and event streaming.
• Hands‑on experience with relational and non‑relational data stores, caching and replication.
• Operational expertise on cloud platforms (AWS or Azure) and Kubernetes.
• Ability to use telemetry tools (OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus) for tracing, metrics and structured logging, and to perform load and failure testing.
