Technical Director - Game Development Platform

About the role

An experienced Technical Director is sought to own the technical vision behind a cutting-edge game development platform. The role covers engine runtime, rendering, graphics, tools, pipelines and developer experience, working with senior leadership to turn ambitious ideas into practical technical strategies. It is based on-site in Reykjavík, Iceland, with relocation support for international candidates.

Key responsibilities

• Define and lead technical strategy across engine runtime, rendering, graphics, tools, pipelines and shared development technologies.
• Work with senior leadership to turn product goals and business priorities into technical plans.
• Manage, mentor and develop technical leaders across Graphics, Runtime and Tools.
• Provide architectural direction focused on performance, scalability, maintainability and developer experience.
• Drive the adoption of AI-assisted development to improve productivity and iteration speed.
• Develop and execute an open-source strategy supporting the platform's accessibility and adoption.
• Communicate technical priorities, trade-offs, risks and opportunities across the organisation.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in senior technical leadership roles in game development.
• Proven ability to set technical direction and align multiple engineering teams.
• Experience managing senior engineers, technical leads or engineering managers.
• Solid engineering background and technical credibility to guide architecture and code reviews.
• Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences.

Required skills

• Game engine development: runtime systems, graphics or rendering, and developer tooling.
• Strong understanding of AI-assisted development and open-source technologies.
